Susanna Langstaff - Classroom 1

If you were to catch me in my favorite place, I would be walking through the oak woodland with a pair of binoculars around my neck. I love to be outside noticing what is growing, changing, and happening all around me. My love of nature and being outdoors was nurtured by my upbringing. I spent many days playing in the dirt and running about barefoot. Currently, I am a volunteer at Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. I’ve monitored California Red-legged frogs and have helped out in the visitor center. I contribute articles to the docent newsletter and participate in education outreach events.

I also grew up without a television and I think this nurtured my love for reading and learning. I used to get in trouble for reading when I was supposed to be cleaning my room! My enjoyments of learning lead me to complete a BA degree in Liberal Studies with a Minor in Environmental Studies at San Jose State. I then went through the teaching credential program at CSU Monterey Bay, fully expecting to begin my career in elementary education.

After completing a part-time position teaching 4th and 5th grade History and Social Studies and experiencing the push for test scores over developmentally appropriate learning, I chose to take classes in Cabrillo’s Early Childhood Education program.
I am inspired by Cabrillo’s philosophy that focuses on building relationships with children and families and nurtures developmental growth through play based learning.

I feel that the kind of teaching and learning that I am participating in here at Coastal Community Preschool, helps me to better understand myself, and to support children and families in a life of joyful learning.
